Bridgeport, Connecticut – Drivers across southern Connecticut and the lower Hudson Valley face expanding patches of black ice before 9 a.m. Thursday as temperatures fall below freezing ahead of sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, clearing skies and lighter winds have allowed readings to slip under 32 degrees, rapidly freezing leftover moisture from overnight precipitation and snowmelt. Forecasters expect icy spots to become more widespread through the early commute.

In Connecticut, communities from Stamford and New Haven to New London and Middletown are seeing slick untreated roads. Elevated stretches of I-95, the Merritt Parkway, I-84, and Route 8 are especially prone to refreezing. In New York, Rockland and Westchester counties, including White Plains and Yonkers, face icy patches on the Saw Mill River Parkway, I-287, and local side streets.

Sidewalks, parking lots, and train platforms may also turn slippery. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Pedestrians should use caution on untreated surfaces.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by late morning, improving travel conditions, but additional advisories are possible if refreezing occurs again overnight.
