Trims Camp, Alaska – Drivers along a critical stretch of the Richardson Highway face life-threatening whiteout conditions tonight as 45 mph wind gusts whip snow across the Eastern Alaska Range, forcing major road closures through Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks and Anchorage, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 3 p.m. AKST Thursday for the Eastern Alaska Range south of Trims Camp and the Northern Copper Valley, including Paxson and Isabel Pass. Winds up to 45 mph are driving significant blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near zero at times.

Alaska 511 has closed portions of the Richardson Highway from milepost 148 north to Paxson and from Paxson to milepost 218. Another closure is in place between milepost 186 and 218, with hazardous travel extending toward Donnelly Dome. Officials warn that conditions outside the closures remain extremely dangerous, especially across exposed passes.

Travel is restricted to emergencies only. Anyone who must drive should carry tire chains, blankets, food, water, a shovel and a fully stocked winter survival kit. If stranded, stay inside your vehicle and call 511 for updated road conditions.

Whiteout conditions are expected to persist through 3 p.m. Thursday, and additional restrictions remain possible if winds fail to ease.
