Denver, CO – Wind gusts up to 45 mph and humidity dropping to 16 percent are creating explosive wildfire conditions across the Palmer Divide through 6 p.m. MST. Any spark could spread quickly in dry grasslands this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Elbert County, central and eastern Douglas County above 6,000 feet, and southeast Elbert County into southern Lincoln County. West winds will range from 15 to 25 mph with stronger gusts, while relative humidity falls to critically low levels.

Communities along the Palmer Divide, including areas near Castle Rock, Elizabeth and Kiowa, face the highest risk during peak afternoon heating. Strong crosswinds could push flames rapidly across open terrain, threatening fences, outbuildings and rural roadways. Fire crews remain on heightened alert across Fire Weather Zones 241 and 247.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, welding or using equipment that could create sparks. Secure trailer chains, properly discard cigarettes and delay any debris burning plans.

The Red Flag Warning expires at 6 p.m. MST, but additional alerts could be issued if winds remain strong into the evening.
