Hudson, N.Y. – Snow is piling up at nearly 1 inch per hour in bands early Monday, creating whiteout conditions and dangerous travel across eastern New York, the Berkshires and southern Vermont before the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for Greene, Columbia and eastern Rensselaer counties in New York, Northern and Southern Berkshire counties in Massachusetts, and Bennington and Windham counties in Vermont. An additional 3 to 9 inches of snow is expected, pushing storm totals to 8 to 16 inches, with the highest amounts over the mountains. Wind gusts up to 45 mph will drive blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility below a quarter mile.

In the Hudson Valley, Routes 9, 23 and 32 are snow-covered, while higher elevations near Hunter, Windham and Prattsville are seeing the heaviest bands. In the Berkshires, Route 7 and Route 20 near Pittsfield and Great Barrington remain slick. Southern Vermont, including Bennington and Brattleboro, faces drifting snow along Route 9 and Route 7.

Strong winds combined with heavy, wet snow may snap tree limbs and knock out power. Officials urge residents to delay travel, carry emergency supplies and prepare for scattered outages. The warning remains in effect until 7 p.m., with conditions gradually improving later tonight.
