Augusta, Maine – Roads across central Maine will turn snow-covered by midmorning Monday, and the evening commute could become slow and hazardous as 4 to 8 inches of accumulation piles up before 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday for Central Interior Cumberland, Androscoggin, Kennebec and Interior Waldo counties. Cities including Augusta, Lewiston, Auburn, Waterville and Gorham are expected to see steady snowfall with gusts up to 35 mph. While flakes may begin near the end of the morning commute, forecasters say the heaviest impacts will target the drive home Monday evening.

Interstates 95 and 295, along with Route 202 and Route 3, could become slick as moderate snow reduces visibility. Blowing and drifting snow will develop in open areas as winds increase, though widespread power outages are not expected.

Farther south and west, Interior York County in Maine and much of central and southern New Hampshire, including Concord, Laconia, Rochester and Keene, could see 6 to 12 inches by 10 p.m. Gusty winds will create localized near-zero visibility in open terrain.

Officials urge drivers to check newengland511.org and delay non-essential travel. Snow tapers late tonight, but slippery roads may linger into early Tuesday.
