Bangor, Maine – Snow will rapidly intensify late Monday morning across eastern Maine, and drivers around Bangor and along Route 1 could see visibility drop sharply as heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts move in before the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Southern Penobscot and Northern Washington counties, including Bangor, Brewer, Orono, Old Town, Vanceboro, Danforth and Topsfield. Total snow accumulations will range from 4 to 7 inches, with the highest amounts expected east of Bangor. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph, creating areas of blowing snow.

Roads such as I-95 through Bangor and Route 9 toward Calais may become snow-covered and hazardous by late afternoon. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility during the Monday evening and early Tuesday morning commutes.

Isolated power outages are possible as gusty winds combine with accumulating snow on tree limbs. Officials urge residents to check newengland511.org for updated road conditions and delay unnecessary travel.

Snow and strong winds will taper early Tuesday morning, but difficult travel may linger through the start of the day.
