South Bend, Ind. – Lake-effect snow bands are sweeping across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan overnight, coating highways and creating slick travel ahead of the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST (noon CST) Monday for Starke, Marshall, La Porte and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, along with Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. An additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected, with localized totals up to 6 inches under persistent bands. Wind gusts around 25 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow.

Interstate 94 from La Porte into Berrien County, U.S. 31 near South Bend and State Road 23 in Starke County could become snow-covered and slick, especially where bands stall. Visibility may drop quickly within heavier bursts.

Both Indiana and Michigan transportation officials urge motorists to slow down and check 511 for updated road conditions before traveling. The most hazardous conditions are expected through midmorning, with gradual improvement by early afternoon as bands weaken.

Snow showers may linger, but travel conditions should slowly improve after midday Monday.
