Wapato, Washington – A deputy-involved shooting followed a traffic stop and pursuit Tuesday night near Wapato.
According to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 11 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, when a deputy attempted a traffic stop near Knight Lane and Campbell Road. During the stop, the driver allegedly fired multiple gunshots at the deputy with a handgun and then fled at a high rate of speed.
Authorities said the deputy initiated a pursuit. The suspect later crashed near the intersection of Jones Road and Campbell Road and was taken into custody.
Investigators reported that deputies recovered a handgun and illegal drugs from the vehicle. The driver was booked into the county jail on two counts of first-degree assault, attempting to elude, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Officials said the deputy fired his handgun in response to the suspect allegedly shooting at him. No one was injured by gunfire.
The case is being investigated by another law enforcement agency. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending both an independent and internal review to determine whether policy and procedure were followed.
In court Wednesday afternoon, a judge set bail at $2 million.
The late-night pursuit temporarily affected traffic in the Wapato area, impacting overnight commuters and nearby residents.
