Munising, MI – Drivers across Alger, Marquette, Gogebic, Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, and Ontonagon Counties should prepare for hazardous travel conditions Friday as lake-effect snow and strong winds move through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST Friday. The advisory warns of accumulating snow combined with powerful wind gusts that could significantly reduce visibility.

Forecasters say 1 to 4 inches of snow are expected, but the greater concern will be winds gusting up to 45 mph, which may lead to widespread blowing and drifting snow. These conditions could make roads slippery and difficult to navigate, particularly during the Friday morning and evening commutes.

The advisory covers all of Alger County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a region frequently impacted by lake-effect snow events. Gusty winds may also cause tree branches to fall, creating additional hazards for motorists and potentially leading to isolated power disruptions.

Residents and travelers are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and keep a safe distance between vehicles. Visibility may drop quickly in open areas and along east-west roadways where drifting snow is more likely.

Local officials recommend checking road conditions before heading out and carrying winter emergency supplies if travel is necessary. Conditions are expected to gradually improve Friday night as winds weaken and snowfall tapers off.
