Vermont – The cold feels sharp along Lake Champlain this morning, with brittle air, frozen breath, and wind pushing straight through winter coats. Sidewalks look dry, but patches of ice linger in shade, especially near the waterfront and neighborhood streets.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, temperatures started the morning in the single digits, with wind chills dropping near 14 degrees below zero. North winds gusting over 10 mph add bite, making even short errands uncomfortable without full winter gear.

Across northern Vermont, this cold snap keeps highs limited today, barely reaching the lower teens in Burlington. Sunshine helps, but it does little to melt leftover snowpack. That creates prime conditions for flash freezing later, especially where afternoon melting refreezes after sunset.

Monday brings modest improvement. Skies stay mostly sunny, and highs climb into the lower 20s. Tuesday trends slightly milder, near the mid-20s, but clouds increase as the next system approaches. While widespread snow is not guaranteed, light snow showers or flurries become possible later in the week, especially Friday into Saturday. Even small amounts could quickly coat untreated roads.

Drivers along I-89 and Route 7 should remain cautious during early mornings and evenings, when temperatures fall back into the single digits. Walkers and commuters should watch for icy steps and slick parking lots, even after dry days.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook keeps Vermont colder than normal through much of the first full week of February. While parts of the southern U.S. warm dramatically, New England remains on the cold side of the pattern. That keeps snow chances in play and limits any sustained thaw.

Layer up, protect pets, and keep extra time in your commute plans. Feeling the cold where you live? Share what conditions look like in your neighborhood.
