According to Major Alan Moore, preliminary investigation shows that a white 2021 International semi-tractor-trailer driven by 65-year-old James Westfall of Union City, Indiana, was traveling northbound when a southbound black 2016 Kia Optima, driven by Tyler Dunn, 29, of Cincinnati, Ohio, attempted to pass another semi-truck and collided head-on with Westfall’s vehicle.
Deputies said both passengers in the Kia were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their names are being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. The semi sustained heavy front-end damage and came to rest in a ditch on the east side of the roadway.
State Road 1 was closed for several hours while deputies investigated the scene with assistance from the Hagerstown Police Department, Cambridge City Police Department, multiple fire and EMS agencies, and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office.
