Caribou, ME – A strong cold front is sweeping across Maine today, bringing periods of heavy rain followed by much cooler, gusty conditions. According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rain will taper off from north to south through the afternoon as the front pushes across the state.
Rainfall totals are expected to average around an inch statewide, with slightly higher amounts possible in northern and Downeast Maine. Behind the front, much cooler northwest winds will usher in a crisp autumn chill, with highs ranging from the mid-50s in northern areas to the mid-60s Downeast.
Tonight into Thursday will remain breezy and cool, with overnight lows dipping near freezing in the north and into the upper 30s along the coast. Highs Thursday are forecast to reach the upper 40s north and the mid-50s Downeast.
Conditions improve by Friday, when sunny skies and seasonal temperatures in the upper 50s are expected. The weekend looks pleasant, with sunshine and highs near 60 across much of the state.
Residents are advised to watch for brief ponding on roadways during heavy rainfall this morning and to secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds.
