Union, MO – Authorities in Franklin County are warning residents about a surge in cable thefts that have disrupted internet, phone, and power services throughout 2025. Thieves are allegedly cutting down overhanging AT&T and Charter Spectrum cables, stripping them for copper, and selling the material to scrap yards.

According to the Franklin County Sheriffโ€™s Office, deputies have made arrests in several cases, but officials believe multiple groups are involved. Sheriff Steven Pelton said his office, along with the Property Crimes Unit, is working to stop the thefts but is urging the public to assist by reporting suspicious activity.

Officials said stolen cables not only cost providers millions but also pose risks to public safety. Cable theft can cause outages that affect schools, hospitals, and emergency response systems. The crimes reportedly involve suspects riding bicycles or walking along dark county roads at night, sometimes using flashlights or carrying tools such as pole saws or reciprocating saws.

Authorities stressed that these thefts are more than a nuisance. โ€œCable theft is not just a nuisance; itโ€™s a crime with real, damaging consequences to the citizens of this County,โ€ Sheriff Pelton stated.

The Sheriffโ€™s Office advised residents to immediately call 911 if they witness suspicious activity or believe a crime is occurring. Non-emergency reports can be made through the Franklin County Sheriffโ€™s Office at 636-583-2567.
