Spotsylvania, VA – A burglary arrest early Sunday morning in Spotsylvania turned violent after a suspect allegedly fought with deputies, attempting to disarm one during the confrontation.
According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 2:07 a.m. to the 6800 block of Red Rose Village for a reported burglary. A resident told authorities that a known individual forced entry into their home by breaking through a window screen.
When deputies arrived, they found the suspect inside. Authorities said the man immediately struck one deputy as officers attempted to take him into custody. A deputy deployed a Taser, which reportedly had no effect. The suspect allegedly continued to resist, wrapping his arms around a deputy’s waist and attempting to pull the deputy’s firearm from its holster.
Deputies were able to maintain control of the weapon, using retention training, while another officer deployed pepper spray, which helped subdue the suspect. The man was treated on scene by Spotsylvania Fire/Rescue. No deputies were seriously injured.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Nikoalis Conley, was charged with two counts of assault on law enforcement, attempting to disarm an officer of a firearm, obstruction of justice with force, larceny, trespassing, and breaking and entering. He was transported to Rappahannock Regional Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office commended deputies for what it described as professional actions during a potentially life-threatening struggle. Officials also expressed support for the victim, who endured the impact of the alleged crime.
