Charleston, W.Va. – West Virginians can expect a shift to cooler, crisper conditions as a dry cold front pushes through the region Thursday evening, bringing a refreshing change from late-summer warmth.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the front will pass through northern West Virginia first, carrying a slight chance of isolated showers before reinforcing a drier air mass across the state on Friday. Highs will settle in the 70s across the lowlands and 60s in the mountains, while overnight lows dip into the 40s and 50s, especially in higher elevations.

Drivers and early commuters in places like Morgantown, Elkins, and Beckley should be prepared for cooler mornings with patchy valley fog possible. Outdoor plans across Charleston and Huntington will benefit from the clear, sunny stretch Friday into Saturday, when high pressure rebuilds. The dry air will also mean comfortable evenings for high school football and outdoor events.

Residents are advised to keep jackets handy for cooler nights and to plan for more seasonal temperatures heading into the weekend. Additional advisories are not expected, though NWS forecasters note the dry pattern should hold into early next week.
