Salt Lake City, UT – Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected across northern Utah Thursday afternoon and evening, with dry thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 50 mph threatening to spark and spread wildfires. The National Weather Service warns that even a single lightning strike could ignite new blazes in the parched Salt Lake Desert region.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, scattered thunderstorms will develop over higher terrain and drift into adjacent valleys Thursday, bringing little to no rain. The extended stretch of hot, dry weather has left vegetation primed to burn, and gusty microburst winds may drive flames quickly across open land.

Fire managers urge residents to avoid any activity that could produce sparks, including outdoor welding, grinding, or campfires. Drivers should ensure towing chains do not drag and create roadside ignitions. Outdoor recreation in remote desert areas should be approached with caution as conditions could deteriorate rapidly.

The Fire Weather Watch is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, with potential for additional advisories if storms persist into the weekend.

Five Day Salt Lake City, UT Forecast:

  • Wednesday: Sunny and hot, high near 101°F, low 71°F.
  • Thursday: Sunny, chance of showers and thunderstorms in afternoon. High 97°F, low 69°F. Critical fire weather conditions.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, chance of showers and storms after noon. High 95°F, low 69°F.
  • Saturday: Partly sunny, slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. High 92°F, low 67°F.
