Phoenix, Arizona – Dangerous heat continues to bake Central Arizona with highs reaching 109°F Wednesday, but a shift is coming. A new round of monsoon storms is expected to develop Thursday afternoon, bringing brief relief from the heat—and the risk of flash flooding to parts of Maricopa County.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday, with temperatures between 107°F and 111°F across the Valley, including Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and Glendale. Heat risks remain high, especially for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. Residents are urged to stay indoors, hydrate, and avoid peak afternoon hours outside.

By Thursday, a 40% chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms could impact the region, especially in the East Valley and North Phoenix. The storm risk increases the threat of localized flooding, brief gusty winds, and lightning delays for evening commuters or sports events. Rain totals aren’t expected to be heavy, but even minor downpours can overwhelm dry ground and urban streets.

Friday brings another round of potential storms, though slightly cooler highs near 105°F may offer some relief. The monsoon pattern may hold through early next week, but each day’s storm chances will vary.

Stay weather-aware through the weekend and check alerts before planning outdoor activities. Cooling centers remain open through Wednesday evening across Maricopa County.
