Duluth, MN – Storm chances return to northeast Minnesota Thursday afternoon, with the highest risk for severe weather developing late Thursday night into early Friday morning. Gusty winds, heavy rain, and lightning could impact travel, particularly along U.S. Highway 53, Interstate 35, and rural county roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, Thursday’s storms are not expected to be severe during the day, but additional rounds Thursday night through Saturday morning could be strong to severe. The most concerning window for severe storms is overnight Thursday into Friday morning across north-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, followed by another chance Friday afternoon and evening.

Residents in Duluth, Hibbing, and Grand Rapids should be prepared for sudden downpours and reduced visibility on roads. Outdoor plans, including late-night fishing trips or camping, may need to be adjusted. Keep devices charged and have a way to receive weather alerts overnight.

Air quality remains a concern through Wednesday evening due to Canadian wildfire smoke, especially for sensitive groups such as those with asthma or heart conditions. Conditions should improve by Wednesday night as winds shift.

Thunderstorm chances linger into the weekend, with Saturday looking like the next widespread rain chance. Warnings could be issued if storms strengthen.
