Omaha, Neb. – Overnight storms could rattle parts of northeast Nebraska early Thursday morning, bringing a brief but potent threat of damaging winds, heavy rain, and even an isolated tornado. The National Weather Service in Omaha says the greatest risk will fall between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., mainly in counties along the South Dakota border.

According to the agency, there is a 20–40% chance of storms and a 5–15% chance that any will turn severe. Areas from Ainsworth to Hartington face the highest risk, with wind gusts topping 60–70 mph possible. Hail up to the size of pennies and locally heavy rain may also occur, though most of the state will remain dry.

Strong storms are expected to develop in South Dakota Wednesday night, with the southern edge possibly crossing into Nebraska after midnight. The setup could produce short-lived tornadoes, though that threat remains low. Residents in northeast counties are urged to secure outdoor items and keep multiple ways to receive warnings overnight.

More alerts could be issued if storm activity trends farther southeast. The weather service advises staying weather-aware through Thursday morning.
