Amarillo, Texas – Spotty storms could make a hot return to Amarillo by Wednesday afternoon, just as residents battle 90+ degree heat. Travel along I-40 and throughout the city may be impacted by isolated showers and possible lightning beginning after 1 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, a 20% chance of thunderstorms will develop across the Amarillo area Wednesday, July 30, following a sunny, sweltering morning with highs nearing 94°F. Winds from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph may offer little relief. The storm chances increase to 30% into Wednesday night, with activity expected before 1 a.m. and calm returning by early Thursday.

Though severe weather is not expected, gusty winds, brief downpours, and lightning remain concerns—especially for drivers and outdoor workers. Residents should monitor the radar and delay yard work or evening commutes if storms spark.

Thursday, July 31, brings another slight storm chance (20%) by early afternoon, with cooler highs around 84°F and a shift to breezy north winds. By Thursday night, storm chances increase again to 40%, peaking near midnight.

Looking ahead:
Friday remains unsettled with a slight chance of thunderstorms (20%), tapering off by evening. Relief arrives Saturday and Sunday with mostly sunny skies and highs between 89–92°F—ideal for outdoor plans.
