Jackson, MS – A heat advisory remains in effect for Jackson and much of central and southern Mississippi until 8 p.m. CDT today, as temperatures soar with heat indices reaching up to 110°F. This extreme heat, combined with high humidity, poses a serious risk for heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service, residents across a wide region including Vicksburg, Meridian, and Hattiesburg should prepare for dangerous conditions. The heat index will make outdoor activities potentially hazardous, especially between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service is advising residents to drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. Anyone planning outdoor activities should limit physical exertion to early morning or evening hours, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to minimize the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Cities like Jackson and Meridian, where the heat index is expected to peak, should take extra precautions, especially for the elderly, children, and those with preexisting health conditions. Remember to check on neighbors and loved ones during the hot hours. In case of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or confusion, move to a cool area and call 9-1-1 if needed.

This heat wave is expected to last through the evening, but temperatures may remain uncomfortably high in the coming days.
