Albuquerque, New Mexico – Heavy rain and the threat of flash flooding will dominate New Mexico’s weather this week, putting burn scar areas and normally dry arroyos at risk as storms roll in each afternoon and evening through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, widespread storms will bring daily precipitation chances of 40–80% for much of the state, with the highest risks and rainfall totals expected from Wednesday through Friday. Most areas will see between 0.25″ and 0.5″ of rain, but isolated pockets—especially in central and northern high terrain—could exceed 2–3 inches. The most hazardous flooding is likely near recent wildfire burn scars, where fast-rising water could quickly overwhelm low-lying spots and roads.

Major cities including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Farmington, and Gallup face afternoon storms that could dump heavy rain, produce hail, and generate damaging wind gusts. Lightning will threaten outdoor activities every day. Roadways such as I-25 and I-40, plus rural highways in northern and western New Mexico, may be impacted by fast water or debris flows. Residents should avoid crossing flooded roads, have multiple ways to receive alerts, and charge devices ahead of possible power outages.

Temperatures will trend near normal until midweek before dropping 5–10° below average by Friday, giving relief from recent heat. Storms will help keep afternoon highs cooler, especially in areas with heavier rain.

Rain and storm chances remain high through Saturday, with continued flood risks—especially in burn scar areas. Stay tuned for updates and possible new advisories later this week.
