Arizona Weather Alert: Thunderstorms Return to Flagstaff After 11 a.m. Friday — Summer Safety Warning on I-17

Flagstaff, AZ – Afternoon plans across northern Arizona may be interrupted Friday as monsoon-driven thunderstorms move into the Flagstaff area by late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms will develop after 11 a.m. Friday, accompanied by southwest winds reaching up to 14 mph and gusts near 22 mph. Conditions could create dangerous crosswinds along I-17 and I-40, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Flagstaff is expected to hit a high near 88°F Friday, with storm chances continuing Saturday (20%) and increasing to 30% Sunday. Each day’s storms are most likely to develop in the late morning or early afternoon, typical of Arizona’s summer monsoon pattern. Winds may gust as high as 17 mph on Sunday, making outdoor activities riskier during peak hours.

Residents should stay weather-aware, especially when hiking, camping, or driving through the Coconino National Forest. Storms could cause isolated power outages, quick street flooding, or lightning delays for outdoor events.

Looking ahead, storm chances continue to climb through midweek, with a 40% chance Monday and Tuesday and up to 50% by Wednesday, July 16. Daytime highs remain near 87–88°F through Tuesday, with overnight lows around 54–55°F.
