A summer weather alert is in effect for Mesa County as persistent heat threatens outdoor safety and raises the risk of heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service, Friday, July 11, kicks off a multi-day heat stretch with sunny skies and a high of 99°F. Winds will remain light but shift to the northwest by afternoon. Saturday and Sunday intensify the heat, with Saturday topping out at 98°F and Sunday peaking at 101°F. Overnight lows will only dip into the mid-60s, offering minimal relief.

Drivers on I-70 and rural highways near Grand Junction should prepare for hot pavement conditions and reduced vehicle performance. Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak hours (12 p.m. to 6 p.m.), drink plenty of water, and check on neighbors and pets. Cooling shelters may open if temperatures exceed 100°F for consecutive days.
