Buffalo, N.Y. – Triple-digit heat index values could make for dangerous conditions across Western New York on Sunday, with peak temperatures and humidity expected to hit hardest by mid-afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Heat Advisory is in effect Sunday for portions of the Niagara Frontier, Genesee Valley, and northern Finger Lakes. Heat index readings could reach 100°F in cities like Olean, Rochester, and Dansville by 3 p.m., driven by high humidity and temperatures in the low 90s.

Communities including Buffalo, Batavia, and Canandaigua are expected to see maximum heat indices between 90°F and 96°F, with discomfort beginning as early as 9 a.m. The most intense heat is forecast from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., when prolonged outdoor exposure could lead to heat-related illness.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors. Cooling centers and public splash pads may offer relief in urban areas. Avoid leaving pets or children in vehicles at any time.

This level of heat isn’t unusual for July in Western New York, but prolonged heat like this can still overwhelm those unprepared. Additional advisories may be issued if the heat persists into Monday.
