Burlington, VT – Scorching heat will grip Vermont and northern New York on Sunday, with dangerous heat index values reaching the upper 90s during the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday for the Champlain and lower Connecticut River Valleys. The hottest conditions are expected between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., with real-feel temperatures peaking near 98°F in areas like Burlington, Montpelier, Glens Falls, and Springfield.

The heat and humidity could lead to heat-related illness, particularly for children, older adults, and those without access to cooling. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cities like Middlebury, Brattleboro, and St. Johnsbury are all projected to see heat index readings well into the 90s.

While a few thunderstorms may skirt the Canadian border, the region will remain mostly dry until Monday, when more widespread storms are possible.

Heat advisories remain in place through Sunday evening. More alerts could be issued if Tropical Storm Chantal shifts northward early next week.
