Cleveland, Ohio – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across Northern Ohio Friday afternoon, bringing damaging wind gusts, lightning, and heavy rain between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., especially along and east of I-71.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, there’s high confidence in storm development starting early afternoon in northeast counties such as Cuyahoga, Lake, and Summit, with storms pushing west into the Toledo area after 5 p.m. Although coverage and intensity should diminish by late evening, some storms could reach severe levels with brief downpours and strong winds.

Cities like Cleveland, Akron, Elyria, and Youngstown are expected to see heat index values between 95–98°F before storms arrive, compounding the risk of heat-related illness. High temperatures in the low 90s combined with elevated humidity could make outdoor activity dangerous before storm activity begins.

Drivers are urged to remain weather-aware as visibility may quickly drop in heavier cells. Those in mobile homes or attending outdoor events should plan shelter options in advance.

Storms are expected to weaken by 10 p.m., but further updates may be issued if storms organize more than forecast.
