Chicago, Illinois – Storms firing north of Interstate 80 could bring damaging winds, flooding, and dangerous heat to the Chicago metro Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, isolated thunderstorms are most likely between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. north of I-80, especially across Cook, Lake, and DuPage counties. Gusty winds up to 60 mph and localized street flooding are possible with the strongest storms. Areas near Lake Shore Drive and the Edens Expressway (I-94) may see brief downpours and traffic slowdowns.

Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s Friday afternoon, but humidity will push the heat index toward 100°F. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, hydrate frequently, and monitor for rapidly changing conditions. A Level 1 Severe Thunderstorm Risk and Limited Flooding Risk are both in place for affected areas.

The weekend offers little relief. While Saturday’s high dips to the upper 70s, storm chances persist. Sunday rebounds sharply with highs near 92°F and another round of isolated storms expected in the evening.

Spotters may be needed north of I-80 during Friday’s storm window. Power outages and downed limbs are possible with any stronger cells.

⚠️ Thunderstorm risks continue into Sunday night, with heat concerns extending through early next week.
