Hastings, Nebraska – Floodwaters are slowly receding across parts of south-central Nebraska Thursday morning, but a new threat is on the horizon: dangerous heat. After days of rain and flash flood alerts, Hastings is drying out under partly sunny skies — and preparing for temperatures near 92°F Friday, followed by intense weekend heat and another chance of storms.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the Flood Watch expired at 7 a.m., but low-lying areas near US-281 and rural roads in Adams and Kearney counties may still be impacted by standing water and residual flooding. Drivers should continue to use caution and avoid flooded roadways.

The shift from stormy skies to scorching summer sun begins today, with highs reaching the mid-80s under dry conditions. By Friday afternoon, temperatures will climb into the low 90s, with humidity pushing heat indices even higher. Saturday brings the peak — a high of 96°F, followed by a renewed chance of thunderstorms after sunset.

Residents are urged to hydrate, limit outdoor work during peak heat, and stay weather-aware heading into the weekend.
