South Carolina Summer Weather Alert: Friday Thunderstorms Could Disrupt Travel on I-85 Near Spartanburg Through Evening

Spartanburg, South Carolina – Summer heat meets stormy skies in Spartanburg Friday as a sweltering day gives way to potentially disruptive afternoon thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, high humidity and temps near 95°F will push heat indices to 103°F on June 27. A round of thunderstorms is expected after 2 p.m., bringing gusty winds, brief downpours, and lightning risks across Upstate South Carolina, particularly along I-85 and nearby communities.

Motorists should avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours Friday afternoon and evening. New rainfall amounts will likely stay under a tenth of an inch but could spike in isolated thunderstorms. Those without reliable cooling are urged to stay indoors, hydrate frequently, and limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.

Storm chances remain overnight Friday into early Saturday, especially before 2 a.m. Saturday will see another round of heat and afternoon storm potential with highs around 91°F. Conditions trend drier and slightly cooler Sunday, but isolated showers may linger into Sunday night.
