Marquette, Michigan – Boaters and mariners across western Lake Superior are urged to seek safe harbor immediately, as a Special Marine Warning remains in effect until 6:45 a.m. EDT Saturday due to high winds and steep waves near Isle Royale and the Portage Canal.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, winds exceeding 40 knots and pea-sized hail are possible in waters from Saxon Harbor, Wisconsin, to the upper entrance of the Portage Canal in Michigan, extending 5 nautical miles offshore to the U.S.-Canada border. The affected area includes Isle Royale National Park and waters near Ontonagon.
The strongest winds and wave activity are expected in open waters near Freda and the southern shores of Isle Royale, where steep waves could capsize smaller vessels. While no waterspouts are anticipated, the rapid intensification of conditions presents serious hazards for recreational and commercial mariners alike.
Operators of small craft should remain in port or take immediate protective action. Steer clear of exposed waters and avoid navigating near shallow reefs or shoals that may intensify wave action.
This warning expires at 6:45 a.m. EDT Saturday, but additional advisories may follow if storm conditions persist.
