Columbus, OH – Residents in central and southern Ohio should prepare for a round of severe thunderstorms moving through the region Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. The primary threat will be powerful, damaging winds capable of downing tree limbs and causing power outages across the area.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, OH, the window for severe weather is expected between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday. In addition to damaging winds, some of these storms could produce large hail. While the chance is lower, an isolated tornado cannot be entirely ruled out. Forecasters have indicated that weather spotter activation may be necessary to monitor the storm’s progression.

The line of storms will impact a broad area, including Fairfield, Franklin, and Licking counties, affecting cities from Columbus to Dayton. Residents are advised to secure any loose outdoor furniture or objects that could become airborne. It is also recommended to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts overnight. Travel may be affected, and drivers should remain vigilant for sudden changes in conditions.

Following the overnight storms, Thursday, Juneteenth, will see lingering showers and thunderstorms possible before 4 p.m., with a high near 79 degrees. The weather pattern shifts for the weekend, bringing a stretch of hot and sunny days. Friday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 86, leading into a warmer weekend perfect for outdoor activities.
