Wichita, Kansas – Heavy rain continues across Kansas, putting much of the state under a Flood Watch through Wednesday afternoon, with low-lying roads and creeks expected to spill over.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Wichita and Topeka, rounds of showers and thunderstorms will persist overnight into Wednesday, impacting both urban and rural areas across central, eastern, and southeast Kansas. Counties under alert include Sedgwick, Shawnee, Riley, Cowley, Lyon, and more than 30 others.
Localized flash flooding is possible in cities like Topeka, Wichita, Salina, Emporia, and Parsons, where soils are already saturated and streams are running high. Areas near I-70, I-135, and U.S. Highway 54 could experience rapid water accumulation, making driving hazardous.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, keep devices charged, and prepare for potential alerts. Emergency officials advise moving to higher ground if flooding begins. Rainfall totals may exceed 3 inches in spots, especially under training storm cells.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Additional Flood Warnings could be issued overnight.
