Charleston, S.C. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep across much of coastal South Carolina through 5 p.m. Sunday, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for 14 counties including Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Beaufort.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes potential for damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to quarter-size, and frequent lightning. The alert covers Allendale, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dillon, Dorchester, Florence, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, Jasper, Marion, and Williamsburg counties.

In Charleston and surrounding areas, outdoor plans could be disrupted as afternoon storms intensify. Motorists on I-26 and U.S. 17 should be alert for sudden downpours and low visibility. Emergency managers advise residents to secure loose outdoor items and stay indoors during thunderstorm activity.

Power outages are possible, especially in low-lying coastal zones where saturated soils may lead to tree damage. If you rely on medical devices, ensure they are fully charged. Residents in mobile homes or older structures should have a shelter plan in place.

Storms are expected to taper off early Sunday evening. However, additional watches or warnings may be issued as the system moves inland.
