Merrillville, IN – Police in Merrillville are ramping up patrols around local schools this week after a reported threat of violence toward staff members in the Merrillville Community School Corporation.

According to a statement Monday from the Merrillville Police Department, the threat involved a school resource officer, a principal, and a security officer. Authorities conducted a preliminary investigation in collaboration with school officials and determined the threat to be “of a lower threat level.”

Despite that assessment, police have implemented precautionary measures to reassure the public and maintain safety. This includes the deployment of strategically placed unmarked units and increased police presence across Merrillville schools.

The School Resource Officers and the Detective Bureau are continuing to monitor the situation, police said. Officials are urging the public to report any relevant information to investigations@merrillville.in.gov.

The department emphasized its commitment to transparency and pledged to keep the community updated as more information becomes available.
