Buffalo, N.Y. – Damaging winds and hail could hit parts of western and north-central New York this afternoon as strong thunderstorms develop between 2 and 6 p.m. Friday. The National Weather Service has upgraded portions of the Southern Tier, including areas near Jamestown and Olean, to a Slight Risk for severe storms.

According to the NWS Buffalo office, the most intense cells are expected during peak afternoon hours, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles or property. The risk zone spans cities including Buffalo, Rochester, and Ithaca, with widespread impacts possible across the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions.

Residents in Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties are urged to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for sudden power outages. Travel could be hazardous during the late afternoon commute, particularly on I-86 and Route 219. Emergency officials advise staying indoors during storm activity and monitoring weather alerts on mobile devices or NOAA radios.

This marks one of the first severe weather threats of May for the region, with storm strength driven by a warm front moving in from the southwest. Cooler temperatures on Saturday should bring temporary relief.

Severe weather alerts remain in effect through early evening. More updates will follow if additional warnings are issued.
