Louisville, Kentucky – Heavy rain and thunderstorms sweeping across the Ohio Valley could push river levels to flood stages in cities like Louisville and Cincinnati by Thursday morning, prompting concern for travel and low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, multiple rounds of rainfall are expected through early May, with some areas seeing more than 3 inches of total accumulation by 8 a.m. Thursday. River gauges in western Ohio, southern Indiana, and northern Kentucky may reach Action or Minor Flood Stage due to runoff, particularly near the lower Wabash and Green River basins.
Localized flooding is possible near urban creeks, rural tributaries, and flood-prone roads. Drivers should avoid water-covered routes, especially along U.S. 42 near Louisville and Ohio Route 50 near Cincinnati. Residents in riverfront communities should secure outdoor items and monitor alerts from emergency management.
This week’s rain pattern resembles similar flood-prone spring events from 2017 and 2021. Officials urge residents to keep devices charged, review flood insurance coverage, and prepare alternate routes for commutes.
Showers may ease late Thursday, but the NWS warns that river levels could remain elevated into the weekend. Additional flood advisories may be issued if rainfall continues.
