Goodland, KS – A powerful blizzard is set to impact parts of Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska beginning early Tuesday morning, bringing dangerous travel conditions and strong winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Blizzard Warning has been issued from 2 a.m. MST (3 a.m. CST) Tuesday until 11 p.m. MST (midnight CST) Tuesday for Kit Carson and Yuma Counties in Colorado, Cheyenne County in Kansas, and Dundy County in Nebraska.
Forecasters predict total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with a potential narrow band producing 6 to 12 inches in some areas. Winds gusting up to 70 mph will create whiteout conditions, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening.
Drivers are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Blowing and drifting snow will cause low visibility, particularly along Interstate 70, where travel may become dangerous or impossible. Those who must travel should carry a winter survival kit and avoid using GPS for alternative routes, as road closures and barricades will be in place.
The storm may also cause extensive tree damage and impact agricultural operations, particularly if the heavier snow accumulations occur.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and prepare for potential power outages. For updated road conditions, travelers in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado can dial 511. Emergency responders warn that whiteout conditions could lead to disorientation and life-threatening situations.
Stay tuned to local forecasts for further updates as conditions develop.
