Walworth County, Wisconsin – Authorities in southern Wisconsin are warning residents about a resurgence of scams involving callers impersonating law enforcement and state officials, raising concerns across the region near the Illinois border.

According to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, individuals are contacting residents while claiming to be employees of the sheriff’s office, alleging the person has missed a court date and must pay a fine immediately. Officials said similar calls involve scammers posing as representatives from the Department of Transportation, telling victims they have unpaid citations.

Investigators emphasized that these claims are fraudulent and designed to pressure victims into quickly sending money or providing sensitive personal and financial information.

The sheriff’s office warned residents not to give out personal details, credit card numbers, or purchase gift cards in response to these calls. Authorities said legitimate government agencies will not demand payment in this manner or request gift cards as a form of settlement.

Officials advise anyone who receives such a call to hang up and independently contact the Walworth County Clerk of Courts or the Wisconsin Department of Transportation using verified contact information.

The alert comes as similar impersonation scams have been reported in multiple areas, often targeting individuals with urgent and threatening language to prompt immediate compliance.

Authorities continue to urge residents to remain cautious and report suspected scams to local law enforcement.
