Baraboo, WI – A suspect is in custody following a deadly shooting and a second gunfire incident targeting a police department in Sauk County on Friday afternoon.
According to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received reports around 2:08 p.m. of a shooting at Pewit’s Nest Nature Preserve on County Road W in the Town of Baraboo. Witnesses told authorities a male allegedly pulled a woman from a vehicle and shot her multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Deputies responded and located the victim deceased in the parking lot from multiple gunshot wounds.
About an hour later, at approximately 3:10 p.m., officials reported that a male suspect drove a Kia Carnival minivan into the parking lot of the Sauk Prairie Police Department and fired several rounds into the building’s front entrance. No officers or staff were injured in that incident.
According to police, officers located the suspect vehicle leaving the scene shortly after and conducted a traffic stop around 3:11 p.m., taking the driver into custody without incident. Investigators later determined the suspect was allegedly connected to both shootings.
The suspect’s identity has not been released as the investigation remains active. The victim’s name is also being withheld pending family notification.
Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public. Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including Baraboo Police, Sauk Prairie Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
