Hanover County, Virginia – A Virginia State Police trooper was injured early Friday morning after being struck while working a crash scene along Interstate 95.
According to Virginia State Police, the incident occurred around 5:37 a.m. on Friday on I-95 southbound near the 95-mile marker in Hanover County, located north of Richmond. Troopers were already on scene investigating a separate crash when the collision happened.
Police said a marked state police vehicle was positioned in the left travel lane with emergency lights activated to provide traffic control. A second trooper was parked on the shoulder, also with lights on. Authorities say a 2021 Nissan Rogue traveling southbound in the left lane struck the marked patrol vehicle.
The impact caused significant damage to the state police SUV. The trooper inside the vehicle and the driver of the Nissan were both transported to VCU Medical Center with what officials described as non-life-threatening injuries.
A second trooper at the scene and the driver involved in the initial crash were not injured.
Officials are reminding drivers to follow Virginia’s Move Over law, which requires motorists to change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers must slow down.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities review the circumstances leading up to the collision.
