Cody, Wyo. – Travel through the Bighorn Mountains could become treacherous late Sunday as a snowstorm brings up to a foot of accumulation and wind gusts topping 40 mph through Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight Sunday until midnight Monday for the Bighorn Mountains West and Southeast. Snow totals between 5 and 9 inches are expected, with higher elevations above 9,500 feet possibly exceeding 12 inches.

Drivers on Powder River and Granite Passes should prepare for limited visibility and slippery roads during the Monday morning commute. The worst conditions are forecast between late Sunday night and early Monday.

Wind gusts may cause blowing snow, especially in exposed areas. WYDOT urges travelers to check wyoroad.info for real-time road conditions and avoid unnecessary mountain travel.

This is the first significant May snow event in the Bighorns this year, a reminder that winter weather remains a threat well into spring at high elevations. Snow is expected to taper off late Monday night, but further advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
