Riverton, Wyo. – Afternoon thunderstorms and gusty winds could bring dangerous fire weather conditions to parts of central and southern Wyoming starting Friday and lasting through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, scattered storms will redevelop Friday afternoon and evening—mainly east of the Continental Divide—with the potential for strong wind gusts up to 30 mph and small hail. The biggest concern isn’t heavy rain, but dry lightning and gusty outflow winds that may ignite wildfires. Minimum relative humidity values will drop as low as 10 to 15 percent in southern portions of the state.

Communities including Casper, Rock Springs, and Lander should prepare for shifting weather, especially as dry fuels and breezy conditions increase the fire danger into Monday. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark flames.

From Saturday through Monday, thunderstorm chances will continue daily across northern and central Wyoming, while southern areas will remain dry but breezy—furthering the fire risk. These conditions could gradually spread and intensify into next week.

Hazardous Weather Outlooks remain in effect, and additional alerts are possible if winds or fire danger increases.
