Jackson, Wyoming – Dangerous winter weather continues to intensify across much of western and central Wyoming as a widespread winter storm pounds mountain ranges with heavy snow and powerful winds through early Saturday, making travel across key passes hazardous to nearly impossible.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for the Salt River Range, Wyoming Range, Wind River Mountains, Absarokas, Tetons, Gros Ventre Mountains, and Yellowstone National Park until early Saturday morning. Snow totals of 8 to 16 inches are expected across many ranges, with 1 to 2 feet likely at higher elevations. Wind gusts between 50 and 70 mph are producing blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility.

Salt River Pass, South Pass, Teton Pass, and Togwotee Pass are all expected to see severe travel impacts. The Wyoming Department of Transportation warns that road conditions may deteriorate quickly due to whiteout conditions and snow-packed roadways. Backcountry travel is strongly discouraged as visibility drops and wind-driven snow increases avalanche risk.

In Yellowstone National Park, snow totals vary by location, with lighter amounts near Mammoth and heavier snowfall across southern sections of the park. Gusty winds are expected to compound travel difficulties, especially in exposed areas.

Residents and travelers are urged to delay non-essential travel and prepare emergency supplies if travel cannot be avoided. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through early Saturday, and additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
