Jackson, Wyoming – Travelers and residents across western Wyoming should watch low-lying roads and waterways Saturday as repeated showers and thunderstorms threaten to send runoff into rivers, creeks and flood-prone areas through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday morning for parts of central, northwest and west-central Wyoming. The watch includes Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole, the Absaroka Mountains, Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, western Wind River Mountains, Star Valley, and the Salt River and Wyoming ranges.
Pacific moisture moving across northwest Wyoming will support an extended period of showers and thunderstorms. Locally heavy rainfall could produce enough runoff to flood streams, creeks and other low-lying locations.
Jackson, Alpine, Afton, Thayne and Star Valley Ranch are among the communities covered. The watch also includes Old Faithful, Mammoth and Lake in Yellowstone National Park, putting visitors and weekend travelers within the affected region.
People near waterways or known flood-prone locations should remain ready to act if water begins rising. Drivers should avoid flooded roads and never attempt to cross water covering pavement.
The Flood Watch continues through Sunday morning. Additional Flood Warnings could follow if heavy rainfall produces flooding.
