Riverton, Wyo. – Strong winds and scattered thunderstorms are expected to elevate fire danger across much of central and western Wyoming through Saturday, raising concerns for travelers and residents from Riverton to Casper. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph remain the biggest threat, with lightning and brief heavy rain possible in afternoon and evening storms.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, conditions are near critical for fire spread today across Fremont, Natrona, Johnson, and Sweetwater counties. While storm chances range from 20% to 30%, any lightning strikes combined with dry fuels could spark rapid fire growth. Wind speeds will ease slightly Friday, but fire danger will stay elevated with gusts still reaching 25 mph.

Communities in northern and western Wyoming, including Cody, Jackson, and the Wind River Range, should see higher storm coverage Saturday into Sunday. These storms could bring locally heavy rain, but fire concerns remain where lightning outpaces rainfall.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose objects ahead of the strongest wind periods. Drivers should also use caution on open highways such as U.S. 20/26 near Casper and I-80 across southern Wyoming, where sudden gusts could impact travel.

Elevated fire danger remains a concern through midweek, with more advisories possible as storm chances continue.
