Cheyenne, WY – Travel along major Wyoming highways could become dangerous within hours Thursday night as powerful wind gusts up to 80 mph develop, threatening to tip high-profile vehicles and disrupt traffic through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, High Wind Warnings are in effect across southeast Wyoming through Friday evening, with gusts ranging from 70 to 80 mph expected. The strongest winds will target the Interstate 80 corridor near Arlington and Elk Mountain, as well as the I-80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie .
Wind-prone areas along I-25 near Bordeaux and across central Laramie County, including Cheyenne, will also see gusts up to 70 mph beginning Thursday evening and overnight. These crosswinds can easily push semis, campers, and other high-profile vehicles off course.
Travel may become hazardous or even restricted in exposed areas, especially during the Friday morning and afternoon hours when winds peak. Blowing dust and debris could further reduce visibility.
Drivers of light or high-profile vehicles should delay travel or use extreme caution. Secure loose outdoor items and stay alert for sudden gusts. Warnings remain in effect through Friday evening, with additional advisories possible if winds persist.
