Rapid City, SD – Travel across western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming could become nearly impossible by sunrise Friday as heavy snow and gusty winds rapidly reduce visibility and cover roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, a Winter Storm Warning begins as early as 3 a.m. Friday in the Black Hills and continues through early Saturday, with some northwestern South Dakota areas already under warning conditions overnight . Snow totals will range from 6 to 12 inches in the Black Hills, with 7 to 12 inches across the plains and 4 to 6 inches in parts of Crook County, Wyoming. Ice accumulation up to one-tenth inch is also possible.
Communities including Deadwood, Spearfish, Belle Fourche, and Sundance will see rapidly worsening conditions through the morning commute. Blowing snow driven by wind gusts up to 35 mph may reduce visibility sharply, especially along Interstate 90 and Highway 85.
Rural areas from Faith to Buffalo and Eagle Butte could experience drifting snow and icy patches, making secondary roads difficult to navigate throughout the day Friday.
Drivers should delay travel if possible, carry emergency supplies, and monitor 511 for road conditions. The storm continues through early Saturday, with additional advisories possible as conditions evolve.
