Worcester, Massachusetts – As homes across central Massachusetts glow with holiday lights, fire safety experts are warning that the season’s sparkle can quickly turn dangerous.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), festive celebrations, flickering lights, and winter greenery bring joy to the holidays—but also serious fire risks. The group urges families to check their decorations, watch open flames, and keep trees watered throughout December.

NFPA data shows U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 835 home decoration fires per year, excluding Christmas trees. These incidents cause three civilian deaths, 29 injuries, and about $18 million in property losses annually. Nearly half of all Christmas tree fires begin with electrical problems, while a quarter start when a heat source is too close to the tree.

Candle fires are also more common in December and January, with half of all decoration fires caused by items placed too close to heat sources.

NFPA recommends several key safety steps this season:

  • Keep live trees at least three feet from fireplaces or heaters.
  • Water trees daily to prevent them from drying out.
  • Replace frayed cords and unplug lights overnight.
  • Use battery-operated candles or never leave real ones unattended.

The NFPA also reports that cooking fires peak on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Thanksgiving, making kitchen vigilance just as important as tree care.
