Tampa, FL – A 29-year-old woman has been arrested in Hillsborough County after deputies allegedly uncovered severe cases of child neglect and animal cruelty at her residence.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriffโ€™s Office, the investigation began when three severely neglected dogs were brought to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. One of the dogs was in such critical condition it had to be euthanized, while two others are now recovering.

Deputies later identified the woman as Carla Sanchez Diaz. Authorities said a subsequent search of her home revealed two additional dogs and five children living in what were described as โ€œhorrible conditions.โ€ Hillsborough County Animal Control took custody of the dogs, and the Florida Department of Children and Families assumed custody of the children.

Diaz now faces multiple charges, including five counts of child neglect, three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, three counts of animal abandonment, three counts of unlawful confinement or abandonment of an animal, and two additional counts of animal cruelty.

Sheriff Chad Chronister called the conditions deputies discovered โ€œtruly appalling,โ€ emphasizing that cruelty and neglect will not go unpunished in Hillsborough County. โ€œWe will always stand up for the most vulnerable, and we will ensure those responsible are held fully accountable,โ€ Chronister said in a statement.

Diaz remains in custody as the investigation continues. No further details regarding bond or court dates have been released.
